From August 1 to 26, the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is being held in New York. On August 4, the SGI cosponsored a side event titled “Avoiding Nuclear War: What Short-Term Steps Can be Taken?” with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN and other organizations. The panel discussion featured Chief Executive Officer of the Council on Strategic Risks Christine Parthemore, Director of the Institute of World Economy and Politics Yerzhan Saltybayev and Chairman of the Board of International Peace and Understanding Alexander Harang. Mr. Saltybayev stated that his home country, the Republic of Kazakhstan, was the site of a former Soviet nuclear test site and pledged to contribute to the NPT by sharing the tragic history of the region. Following the event, the SGI delegation and other participants met with President of the Tenth NPT Review Conference H.E. Ambassador Gustavo Zlauvinen. SGI Director General for Peace and Global Issues Hirotsugu Terasaki introduced the SGI’s efforts toward nuclear disarmament and presented President Ikeda’s statement calling for “No First Use” of nuclear weapons to the Ambassador.
