OAKLAND—Dan Kalb, Oakland’s District 1 councilmember, selected the SGI-USA Oakland Buddhist Center in May as a representative to commemorate this year’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Month.
In a newsletter to constituents, he explained that the center serves as a hub for SGI members in Oakland and in the East Bay “who are upholding the ideals of peace, humanity and cross-cultural understanding through informal dialogue with all peoples.”
A year ago, on May 3, 2021, Mr. Kalb declared that the two-block stretch of Opal Street in front of the Oakland Buddhist Center be given a second name: Daisaku Ikeda Way.
Citing the commemorative street naming, he writes in the newsletter: “I am proud that my district is home to such a great institution.”
