Experiences Submissions GuidelinesAfter President Ikeda’s guidance, experiences are often the first type of article that World Tribune readers look for. Experiences have always been an important part of the SGI.
Experiences should not be more than 1,500 words (roughly six typed, double-spaced pages), preferably e-mailed to the respective zone bureau chief or to lkirk@sgi-usa.org or wt@sgi-usa.org. They may be in first person or third person.
They should answer these questions:
What was the problem or obstacle?
How was the problem/obstacle overcome with Buddhist practice?
What was the turning point, the human revolution?
What was the outcome?
Experience Categories
(focus on human revolution unless otherwise stated)
*Profile — specific focus on job or community role (see description below; does not necessarily focus on human revolution)
Pioneer — 30+ years of practice; 60+ years of age (does not necessarily focus on human revolution)
Youth — including ESD, Junior High and High School, YMD, YWD
New Member — one year of practice or less
Shakubuku — by sponsor and new member
International — usually from an international publication; may also fall into another category
SUA — former and current students about their student life
Soka Care — regarding temple-related issues and broader base of what it means to stand up for justice
Contribution — Caution: avoid the suggestion that people are buying benefit. Contribution should reflect sincere desire to respond and support kosen-rufu.
Health — including mental, emotional and physical; for example, overcoming addiction, depression, cancer, severe injury, etc.
Career
Family — parents and children; family and parenting issues
Relationships — Similar to family; may include friendships, work colleagues, etc.
Fulfilling Dreams — For example, Jennifer Gray’s walk across Scotland (Oct. 1, 2004, World Tribune) and Gloria Judge’s Peace Corps stint (March 26, 2004, World Tribune)
*ProfilesA profile is typically a relatively brief (600–900 words) introduction to an individual that focuses on one aspect of that person’s life (e.g., career, community involvement, award, etc.) and provides an example of how to apply Nichiren Buddhism to daily life. It does not necessarily depict the human revolution of the individual.
PhotosPhotos are very important. Photos can bring an experience to life and draw readers into the experience. They should be color and support the nature of the experience. For example, if it’s about family, the whole family should be included. If it’s about work, try to get something in the work environment (this may require getting permission). Please provide a selection of at least three photos and include the name of the photographer and necessary caption information. Prints are fine. If you’re sending digital files, they must be a minimum of 300 dpi and at least 4x6 (larger if possible). Send them as jpeg files.
Please keep in mind that, if an experience is selected for publication, it may be several months (sometimes up to two years) before it may run. The editorial process absolutely includes the author.

Perspectives Submission Guidelines
Word count
Perspectives articles should be around 600 words, but no more than 800.
Purpose
The ultimate purpose of Perspective articles is to offer inspiration to the readers so that they may strengthen their Buddhist practice and faith.
With this in mind, Perspectives should be grounded in the principles of Nichiren Buddhism and the philosophy and spirit of the Soka Gakkai International. They should focus on a principle or concept related to Buddhism. Some possible approaches are:
1. Discussing how a principle or concept related to Buddhism applies to daily life, society or Nichiren Buddhist practice.
2. Taking an observation from daily life, society or Nichiren Buddhist practice and use it to shed light on a principle or concept related to Buddhism.
What To Include
The following suggestions may help:
1. Articles should focus on one main point.
2. Quotes from Nichiren Daishonin’s /SGI President Ikeda’s guidance can substantially support points made in the article. Please cite all quotes, including the title of the book, or date if from an SGI-USA publication and the page number.
3. Please cite your name and contact information (address, email or telephone number) in the word document of your submission. Also, please include a recent headshot (600KB or higher or 300 dpi).
