SGI President Ikeda's Message to the Participants of the Festivals
'Heroes and Heroines of the Mystic Law'

SGI President Ikeda sent the following message to the participants of the SGI-USA Rock the Era Youth Culture Festivals held across the nation in July.

To my dearest, most respected members of the youth division of the SGI-USA!

My sincerest congratulations on holding your culture festival, overflowing with youthful energy to "rock the era" and with grand hopes for the future. I also would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our distinguished guests and friends for your attendance today despite your busy schedules.

From here in Japan, my wife and I are sending our prayers to all of you, with the feeling that we are there together with you today, watching each of your performances.

My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, called out at the very beginning of his essay "Ode to Youth," "A new century will be created by the passion and the power of youth." Your youth festival is truly a significant, historic event, bringing together the passion and power of youth who burn with the spirit to open a new era for America.

You have overcome every sort of obstacle and won admirably! Congratulations! Nothing is ever wasted in the realm of Buddhism. Please be confident that all your painstaking efforts will become a launching pad for your own further growth and the central driving force for the great development of kosen-rufu in America.

Nichiren Daishonin states, "The sole reason for the Buddha's advent in this world was to bring salvation to living beings" (The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 2, p. 391). The purpose of Buddhism is to make human beings happy, and to guide society toward peace and security. You young people who have gathered here today share a noble mission to build peace for American society and the world. I hope that each one of you will dedicate yourself throughout your life to Nichiren Buddhism, the great philosophy of peace that upholds the precious dignity of life, and commit yourself to protecting and serving the people.

I am praying without pause that today's culture festival will spread a thousand or ten thousand waves of happiness and peace, for which humanity so longs, to every corner of the world.

I hope that you, youthful heroes and heroines of the Mystic Law and genuine disciples, will each create a splendid history of the victory of the oneness of mentor and disciple in your own life. I will earnestly continue to pray for your success, glory, happiness and fortune.

Please take good care of the future of kosen-rufu in America and around the world! Cheers to the SGI-USA youth division! May glory be with you!
