2010 Culture of Peace Lecture Series Schedule: Download PDF Choosing Hope: A Young Woman's Journey Lovetta Conto, faced with the dangers of war in Liberia, left her mother and her country at the age of four and fled to Ghana, where she lived with various families in a refugee camp. There she worked with a team of American volunteers to build a school for unaccompanied minors and distinguished herself by advocating for special education for sight-impaired children. She was chosen as the first Strongheart Fellow from the Strongheart Fellowship Program, a groundbreaking social-entrepreneurship program designed to help bright, resilient young people from extremely challenging circumstances develop into compassionate, innovative problem-solvers and leaders that can affect significant social change. In 2008, Lovetta was honored as one of two top world finalists for the 2008 International Children's Peace Prize with the support of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, which is awarded annually to an exceptional child who has demonstrated great courage or remarkable actions to help protect and improve the lives of children who face great risks or injustices. Engaging Women as Peacebuilders Global Citizenship and Conflict Resolution Kenneth Cloke is a mediator specializing in communication, negotiation, and resolving complex multi-party conflicts. He is a nationally recognized speaker and author of many journal articles and books, including Mediation: Revenge and the Magic of Forgiveness. He is co-author with Joan Goldsmith of Thank God It's Monday! 14 Values We Need to Humanize the Way We Work. His university teaching includes USC, and UCLA. He has been an Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University's School of Law; Harvard University School of Law. He has done conflict resolution work in Austria, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, England, Georgia, India, Ireland, Japan, Latin America, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Ukraine, former USSR, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe.
